Have you read Stephen M.R. Covey’s “Trust and Inspire”
Simon & Schuster. Great Britain. 2022
This book is about Leadership style. Covey describes a spectrum of polar opposites in leadership for us and challenges us to make a choice about the best pathway. At one end, he places command and control systems where those in charge dictate and direct what happens with those below them getting told what to do, when to do it and how it needs to be done. At the other end is a state of empowerment, engagement and mutual trust.
Covey’s preference is clearly for the trust, inspiration and collaboration of the later stage. He says this type of leadership clearly has the best results, but his advice has three alerts:
- Leaders will be along the spectrum rather than at either end, and they can change position on it as circumstances change.
- The leader should make a conscious choice as to the style required. Understand yourself.
- He says that even though we know what style is best, the command and control model is still more prevalent.
An excellent, easy read recommended by the QCPPA Executive Officer (2024)
